Upon her return to Midway Island, Captain O'Kane claimed eight sinkings for Tang's third patrol:
  • Tamahoko Maru; passenger-cargo; 6780 tons - June 24, 1944
  • Nasusan Maru; passenger-cargo; 4399 tons - June 24, 1944
  • Nikkin Maru; freighter; 5705 tons - June 30, 1944
  • Taiun Maru No. 2; freighter; 998 tons - July 1, 1944
  • Takatori Maru No. 1; tanker; 878 tons - July 1, 1944
  • Asukazan Maru; freighter; 6886 tons - July 4, 1944
  • Yamaoka Maru; freighter; 6932 tons - July 4, 1944
  • Dori Maru; freighter; 1469 tons - July 6, 1944
After the war JANAC reviewed Tang's claims. In addition to the eight listed above, she was also awarded two other ships:
  • Tainan Maru; freighter; 3175 tons - June 24, 1944
  • Kennichi Maru; freighter; 1938 tons - June 24, 1944
This total of ten ships in one patrol set the war's record for most ships sunk during a single patrol by a  U.S. submarine. For his actions in Tang, O'Kane was awarded a second Navy Cross.
