Following his repatriation from Japanese imprisonment, Captain O'Kane claimed a total of thirteen sinkings for Tang's fifth patrol. JANAC ultimately credited Tang with seven: Joshu Go; freighter; 1658 tons - October 10, 1944 Oita Maru; freighter; 711 tons - October 11, 1944 Toun Maru; freighter; 1915 tons - October 23, 1944 Wakatake Maru; freighter; 1920 tons - October 23, 1944 Tatsuju Maru; freighter; 1944 tons - October 23, 1944 Kogen Maru; freighter; 6600 tons - October 25, 1944 Matsumoto Maru; freighter; 7024 - October 25, 1944 For his actions in Tang, O'Kane was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. It was presented by President Harry S. Truman in March, 1946.
